Film&TV: My Summer of Love

Posted on

“I don’t feel I’m in my own town.” “What d’you mean?” “It don’t feel the same. I quite like it from here… with you”

Made in 2004, Summer of Love has recently been shown on BBC2. This is a weird film. It’s got clever camera angled bits and good dialogue but it’s just very catching-your-Gran-singing-along-to-Lady-Gaga weird.

Director Pavel Pavlikovski shows the blossoming friendship between a posh suspended-from-private-school dramatic teenager Tamsin and lives-above-a-pub Mona. Tamsin played by Emily Blunt is a fantasist concocting wild stories in her head about her life which she tells to the fancinated Mona played by Nathalie Press. The stunning cinematography shows their over-the-top sulky playful relationship form into a fierce love but with quite a twist at the end.

The two girls meet by accident one day when Mona is pushing her mopehead around and Tamsin comes up to her on a cliche-look-I’m-posh white horse. They become friends, and Mona regularly stays at Tamsin’s house. Then one day while they are casually sitting about in a freezing river on the edge of the village in Yorkshire they kiss do that you’re-so-fit-I’m-going-to-smile-and-look-into-your-eyes thing.

The weird thing is, even though the two girls are really good actors, and you believe that they fall in love, the story lacks any real drama. I kept kind of waiting for something to happen and if you get up to get a bowl of popcorn or some marmite on toast you probably won’t miss anything. The climax is as I said, is weird, and leaves you a bit bewildered and a bit someone’s-taken-the-last-donut disappointed.

I would say watch it as you do like the characters and there are a few good kisses and gropes between the two. It’s very British and there is a funny scene when they are on magic mushrooms and the mad older brother who erects a cross out of cupboards on the hill after finding God provides entertainment. And there’s a good few shots of Emily Blunt’s boobs which is always worth a look.
